Anabolic Steroids

Anabolic Steroids have gotten a very bad reputation with athletes sometimes USING them illegally and the problems they have caused for people who abuse them. There are, however, medical conditions they should be considered for use with. Anabolic steroids are effective in treating many health related problems:

  • Anabolic Steroids can be used for children who aren't growing properly. They can help promote bone growth and increase the appetite so proper nutrition is received.
  • In male children, anabolic steroids can be used to bring on delayed puberty. Sometimes this is necessary, and it helps to stimulate testosterone production.
  • Anabolic steroids can be used to treat some problems associated with AIDS.
  • Cancer is another disease they can be used to treat. Anabolic Steroids help to rebuild muscle and tissue that may have been weakened or damaged from the disease.
  • Anabolic steroids have been used to treat anemia to help build up the red blood cells.
  • They have been used to treat osteoporosis, as a bone tissue builder.
Anabolic Steroids, like most medications though, can cause some potentially serious side effects:
  • Abdominal side effects (including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, lack of appetite)
  • Sleeping problems
  • Acne
  • Mood swings
  • Hair growth, or hair loss
  • Painful erections
  • Changes with sexual desire
  • Women may experience their voice becoming deeper or hoarse
  • Women may experience growing unwanted body hair
  • Women may experience an irregular menstrual cycle
  • Swelling of extremities
  • Stunted growth in children
  • Blood sugar problems for diabetics
  • Liver disease (rare- usually only if misused or not monitored properly by a doctor)

Using steroids is a serious thing and it should only be done under the care of a doctor. Using anabolic steroids for the purpose of becoming a better athlete, gaining more muscle mass, or performing better is considered misuse and is not encouraged.

Anabolic steroids are not legal for over-the-counter sale in the USA. If you or a loved one needs to be treated with anabolic steroids, it is not recommended that they be used for a long length of time. If anabolic steroids are abused, they have the potential to create a psychological dependence, making the user feel addicted to them. When coming off of anabolic steroids, depression and suicidal thoughts may occur.

Anabolic steroids have their place if they're used as medically necessary and under the supervision of a doctor. Other than that, they should be left alone. Use and abuse are not the same thing. If you need to use them for medical reasons, use them wisely under the care of your doctor.
